At the end of the day, getting into a program is really dependent on a confluence of factors (many of them rather nebulous, like the notion of &quot;fit&quot;) which the applicant only has a modicum of control over.  Like you said, it is up to the student to do the prep work and put themselves in a strong position.  After that, grab your rosary beads and hang on for dear life.  :-)</description>
