That's a good question, Kris. I think his existentialism has blocked his vision from those verses. Unfortunately, I don't his commentary on John readily available or else I'd look it up at those sections, since he doesn't reference them in his Theology.

Hey Brandon. I appreciate the post and have to admit, this was a timely find on my part. I had just read a quote of his on John's writings on another blog. I liked what I saw but didn't know much about the guy. So thanks for giving me a nutshell of what he thinks.

One thing though (you can try to speak for him yourself if you like): In your 7th paragraph you say this: "John’s dualism divides humanity into two groups (those of God and those of the devil), but does this suggest that from its outset humanity is determined as to its essence and its fate? No. All share the same position under God’s wrath and Jesus extends to all his invitation and call to decision."

How do you think Bultmann can believe this when Jn 6.44, 15.16, and 17.6, to name a few, reveal that we didn't choose God but that he chose us, even moving in us to respond to him?

I have always had mixed feelings about Bultmann. He was so brilliant and when I read him he raises questions I haven't thought of before. However, his over reliance on existentialist theological categories makes his work (for me at least) untenable. When I was studying with Frank Moloney he was finishing up his commentary on the Gospel of Mark. One reviewer commented that there was a certain commentator (name withheld) on the Gospel of Mark whose work appeared in Frank's bibliography but never appeared in a single footnote. Frank noted that this was true because said commentator, "consistently asks all the right questions and just as consistently arrives at all the wrong answers." This is kind of how I feel about Bultmann. Still, he's a good read. Thanks for the post.

Oh you poor man. You make my brain hurt. God NEVER makes your brain hurt - that's the first clue you're doing something wrong.
